One of the things I enjoy most in the Fall is Inktober. This is a full month of daily tangle prompts from Stephanie Jennifer from 7F5R.
Inktober was actually started by Jake Parker 2009 as a challenge to improve his inking skills and develop positive drawing habits. Our own CZT Stephanie Jennifer decided to follow that model and introduced Zentangle prompts for the first time in 2015.
I have been following these prompts for the last three years for my own practice. I’ve had a wonderful time practicing and honing my Zentangle drawing skills along the way. In this article I grouped my Inktober tiles into weeks and will take you through my thought process as you view the entire month of tangles.
Each year I decide on a different format for drawing throughout the month. This year I decided to work in my watercolor journal that I purchased many years ago. It is a square shape, about 5x5 inches. It’s the perfect size for playing with the tangles and maybe even adding a bit of colour.
Inktober Day 1 - 6
Inktober started off with Flux by Zentangle Inc, Jackstripes by Chrissie Frampton, Anthem by Jody Genovese, Unbirthday by Stephanie Jennifer, Pepper by Zentangle Inc, and Henna Drum by Jane MacKugler.
I wanted to use a mix of black n white as well as watercolor pencils throughout the month. Anthem on day 3 is my favorite due to how the pencil color reacted to water. I knew I was mixing two colors that don’t necessarily go well together, but in this case the yellow/orange worked out and looks like a bit of rust.
Inktober Day 7 -12
Doodah by Zentangle Inc, Amarin by Debbie New, Fugu by Sonya Yencer, Cadent by Zentangle Inc, Divi by Jem Miller, and Bosch by Maria Vennekens.
To be honest, I was in a quandry on what to do with Fugu. The october 9th date was close to Canada’s Thanksgiving and I suddenly saw a cornacopia of seeds, which is what I eneded up drawing.
Inktober Day 13 - 18
Waybop by Zentangle Inc, Iugo by Stephanie Jennifer, Abukas by CharKat, Bunzo by Zentangle Inc, Dragonair by Norma Burnell, and B-Twined by Pegi Schargel.
Lugo on day 14 was completely new to me. This fun tangle gave me an opportunity to play with overlapping watercolour pencil colors that made for a nice blend.
Inktober Day 19 - 24
Molygon by Zentangle Inc, Hollis by Zentangle Inc, Quin by Jem Miller, Aquafleur by Zentangle Inc, Tropicana by Kate Aherns, Zenith by Zentangle Inc.
Molygon is a versatile tangle and lends itself to extensive decorating. This tile was created with a recent lesson from Eni Oken in mind.
Inktober Day 25 - 31
Aurna by Debbie New, Paradox by Zentangle Inc, Gelijoy by Nadine Roller, Icantoo by Hanny Waldburger, Fassett by Lynn Mead, Hamadox by Diana Schreur, and Spud by Debbie New.
Inktober Tangles is such a great process to hone your tangling skills. I really enjoyed the process and learned a few new tangles along the way.
Thanks for droping in for a show and tell.
