I had the privilege of attending a class with Annie Taylor working through her concept of map tangling. Love, love, love this technique!
Gotta Love a Good Splat
A tangling map is just a pool of color that has been blown around to achieve “continents” with “peninsulas” and “islands”. Annie sent students a video in advance of the class, showing us how to create our “maps”. I used Ecoline liquid watercolours to create my maps. Naturally, the watercolour needs to dry completely before tangling begins.
Tangling on a Watercolour Map
Once we got settled into class, the tangling part was relaxing and enjoyable. We used common tangles familiar to most of us and Annie let us know about her favourites. One of Annie’s go-to tangles for maps is Marasu. She says that, “every map should have one.”
My first tangled map turned out pretty good. I can see now that I need a bit more variety and separation between continents.
Map Tangling Practice
Sufice to say, I am hooked. The colours are attractive and therefore inviting me to tangle often. This one is a bit mono-colour for a map, but very enjoyable.
The next one has more colour and I decided to add a Celtic Knot!
Now that you have read about how great map tangling can be, I offer you a free workbook to create your own fabulous map tangles.
