Zentangle headquarters keeps us all learning and growing our art skills by releasing project packs. Each project pack is unique and focuses on a theme or technique. The packs come with Zentangle tiles, booklets, pens, and sometimes new tools for creating Zentangle art.
Project Pack 11
I’ve been enjoying the most recent project pack 11 and finally finished up the last tile. This pack introduced a new paper tile based on the principal of Phi. It is made of the same quality cotton fiber paper as the other Zentangle tiles and the size is roughly 3 x 5 which turns out to be a multiple of Phi.
Phi is an ancient principal that we might associate with mathematics, however, if you look into the concept you will find that it shows up in unexpected places like art. Phi is often referred to as the Golden Ratio because the relationship between the two sides is a very pleasing shape that projects balance and harmony. Many of the masters used the Golden Ratio in their art such as da Vinci, Sandro Botticelli, Michaelangelo, and Georges Seurat. You can read more about the history of Phi in this article.
Project Pack 11 – Day One
Rick and Maria always seem to start us off by introducing the pack and it’s special materials. This time besides the standard pen, pencil and tortillions, we also received General’s chalk pencils in random sets of three colors.
We were introduced to the Markus Operandus II which is a great tool for finding the Phi proportions for most of the Zentangle tiles (not zendala).
After I completed the first tile following along with Rick and Maria, I couldn’t help creating a second adding a ribbon, poke root and rixty. I used my Faber Castel Albercht Durer watercolour pencils to add a different level of colour.
Project Pack 11 – Day Two
Maria led day two with drawing a gourd shape using the tangle gourgeous.
I couldn’t wait to make a second tile with this pattern adding tipple in the open sections. Very dramatic!
Project Pack 11 – Day Three
On day 3, Rick led us through adding Crescent Moon to the back of a Phi tile. Such a fun idea! I added a gold gelly roll layer and then added chalk pencil layers.
Project Pack 11 – Day Four
Maria was back on day four with a great tile using a Fescu like Mooka moving in interesting directions. She added plenty of colour using the General’s pencils.
Project Pack 11 – Day Five
Molly and Martha led us through creating two different Ing tiles.
I love how the shading on this one really brings out the orbs!
Project Pack 11 – Day Six
Day 6 led by Maria, gave us an opportunity to work with fragments.
Project Pack 11 – Day Seven
Rick helped us understand more about Phi proportions as he led us through day 7. I found it a challenge to draw this tile trying to get the proportions corrrect. The shading was fun though.
I can’t decide which direction I like best…….
Project Pack 11 – Day Eight
Sadly, this was the last day of Project Pack 11. Maria had fun extending the shape of the tile with auras, but I really wanted to stop where I did and then added a border. Love how it turned out with the watercolouring!
All in all, I will say that I do very much appreciate the project packs when they come out. I always learn more about the team at Zentangle headquarters and have fun creating the tiles. There is so much to learn!
Just in case your are interested, the next Project Pack is ready for purchase at Zentangle.com and the drawing videos start in just a few days.
Thank you for stopping by. See ya’ next time.
